Chapter 11

COULD HE be happier right now? Teddy didn’t think so. Not only was it another beautiful day in Provincetown, but hope had wrapped its comforting arms around him once again. He’d lived too long without anything to truly look forward to. Now, when he considered life after Provincetown, it didn’t seem more of the same old routine. How kick-ass awesome was that?

His life hadn’t been awful or anything. He hadn’t been living under a rock. He had enjoyed himself. He also had a good job and some decent friends. Plus, he’d had tons of hairy guys and their furry loving to keep him occupied. But that hadn’t been very fulfilling, had it?

He’d been chasing bears to keep himself from thinking about what he really wanted. And that was Brody. Maybe that was lame and pathetic after all these years. What did he care? Oh God, now he sounded like Nino. But Nino had been right. What did it matter what everyone else thought? The only person’s opinion that mattered in his life was his.

He’d remember that from now on.

What he did know, though, was this: he still loved Brody. And just the idea of Brody perhaps still feeling the same way, well, that was enough of a wind current to keep him afloat on his current flight of happiness.

And who did he have to thank for this? Nino, of all people. Wasn’t that just a kick to the nuts?

He sure never saw that one coming. He’d figured they’d scowl at each other till the end of time, but Nino had surprised him. He was actually a pretty good guy. Once he’d gotten past the vain, self-absorbed-prick persona he presented to the world. It turned out that wasn’t who Nino was at all.

Beneath that mask of perfection actually hid a wealth of insecurities that would make Woody Allen look like the most stable of individuals. The real Nino was a person he could handle and perhaps call a friend.

No, that wasn’t right. After last night, Nino was his friend. How weird was that?

That was just one more miracle chalked up to the magic of Provincetown.

The clicking of tiny toenails echoed down the stairwell. Louie had apparently decided to finally get out of bed. The lazy little stinker butt.

“How’s my handsome man?” he asked. Louie bounded off the last step and rocketed toward him. He leaped up on Teddy’s leg, his ears pinned back and the most adorable doggie grin on his muzzle. God, how he loved this dog!

He bent down to scratch Louie’s sweet spot, and Louie responded by gently licking Teddy’s leg while he scratched. It was how they told each other good morning.

“How’d you sleep?” he asked. Louie replied with an arf and a snort. “That good, huh? Me too, boy. Me too.”

Louie’s wagging butt meant he was pleased to hear it. “Thank you,” he told Louie as he stood back up to finish making breakfast, but Louie wouldn’t crawl down from his leg. He was too busy sniffing and snorting across Teddy’s skin.
